Spain: main sources of demographic information.

Registry office.

When a baby is born, it should be immediately registered in this public organism. We are all registered. If we apply for it, the Register office can provide us with a birth certificate. This document is essential for administrative and legal proceedings (health insurance card, schooling, applying for ID card, etc.)

Additionally, when someone dies, it is also compulsory to report it to the register office to obtain the corresponding death certificate.

Another important document issued by the register office is the Family Certificate where wives, husbands and children are listed.

Municipal Census.

It is necessary to be registered in the census of the Town Hall to be able to enjoy different services (health, education, housing, etc.). If we move to another town, we should register immediately.

National Institute of Statistics.

In order to manage a modern society, it is necessary to know a great deal of relevant data. In Spain, the National Institute of Statistics is the official organization responsible for researching and creating all types of demographic statistics 100% reliable. If we want to get information on certain data, we just have to enter its web: http://www.ine.es

The National Institute of Statistics uses all types of sources to obtain its data: municipal census, register office, etc. The census is one of its best-known sources. It is a survey conducted every ten years at a national level where an enormous amount of data about the Spanish population is collected. It is performed by a great deal of census agents.
