General Mortality Rate.
This is another type of index that can be used to find out the level of social well-being. It states the number of deaths per 1000 individuals per year in a country.
It is calculated as follows:
=(no. of deaths)*1000/total population.

Imagine a poor country, with very few hospitals, but with 80% of its popultation under 25. Now imagine a rich country, with a lot of hospitals, but with 80% of its population over 60.
Which country has a higher mortality rate?
In view of our conclusions, is the General Mortality Rate an appropriate indicator of social welfare?
