WHERE DO WE LIVE?

Human settlement.
Ávila, 2011.

During most of our collective existence as species, the human being has been nomad. During thousands and thousands of years, our ancestors lived constantly moving from place to place.

Around 8000 b.C the first permanent human settlements appeared in Middle East. Little by little sedentism spread out across the planet. Nowadays the nomad human groups are a small minority.

In geography, the human settlements are divided into two major groups: cities (urban settlement) and villages (rural settlement).

- Why were our ancestors nomad?

- Why did the human race become sedentary?

- Write the characteristics of the urban settlement in a column and the characteristics of a rural settlemet in another. Think about number of inhabitants, urban layouts, economic activities, leisure, etc.

- Write an operational description of city.

- Write an operational definition of village.
